Mount Elgon Hiking Routes

Best Time to Hike Mount Elgon
If you are planning a Mount Elgon guided hike, you must choose the dry seasons for the most rewarding experiences. June to August and November to March are the best months to travel.

Itinerary:
● Day 1 – Start from the Bushiyi Ranger Post at 1,902 m ASL after a meeting with the UWA. Packed lunch at Shiloko Cave and arrival at Dubi Camp.
● Day 2 – Start from Dubi Camp, cross open moorland and enjoy the sights around, especially at Jackson’s Peak, reach Wagagai Peak, and return to Dubi Camp.
● Day 3 – Taking the Bushiyi Trail, reach the ranger post.
Mount Elgon itinerary 4 days: Bushiyi Trail
With an extra day, it allows hikers to move at a relaxed pace. You get more time to enjoy nature’s beauty, and it is also not as stressful as the Mount Elgon itinerary 3 days. You get the time to appreciate your surroundings, be it the sight of unique bird species, their sounds, the vegetation zones around you, and more. You can also enjoy your time at campsites, appreciating what nature has to offer you.
This route is the right one for you if,
● You are attempting a high–altitude trekking for the first time
● You are comfortable going at a slower pace
● You want to spend valuable time with nature and acclimate to the surroundings.
Itinerary:
● Day 1 – Day of arrival at Bududa or Mbale. Rest the entire day at Mount Elgon’s foothills.
● Day 2 – Start from Bushiyi Ranger Post, stop at Shiloko Cave for lunch, and finally reach Dubi River Rest Camp.
● Day 3 – This is the day when you reach the Wagagai Peak at a height of 4,321m. After enjoying the summit sights, return to Dubi Camp.
● Day 4 – Take the Bushiyi Trail back to reach the Bushiyi Ranger Post.
Mount Elgon itinerary 4 days: Sipi to Bushiyi Trail
The trail starts with hiking near Sipi Falls and passes the Sebei communities, making the trail culturally rich. The beginning of the trail features long stretches of forests, dotted with waterfalls and caves. The view of the caldera is one of the key highlights of the trail.

Itinerary:
● Day 1 – Start of the trail from the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre. After trekking for about 22 km, hikers get to spend the night at the Kajeri Rest Camp.
● Day 2 – The trail starts after breakfast towards the Mwongogo Cave. Lunch is on the shores of the Muyembe River, and the night is in a camp under the night stars.
● Day 3 – Ascend towards the Wagagai Peak, and the last few kilometers are demanding. The return route is via the Bushiyi trail. Reach the Dubi River Rest Camp by noon.
● Day 4 – The final departure occurs through the Bugisu communities, with the exit gate at Bushiyi.

You can use public transport, drive yourself, or hire a private car to travel to and fro from Mount Elgon. The nearest airport to the National Park is Eldoret, and the drive from the airport to the base camps takes about 4,5 hours. For international travelers, Entebbe is the airport to travel to. From here, it takes about 7 to 9,5 hours to Mount Elgon.

Park entry and hiking permits are a must. The fees need to be paid to the Uganda Wildlife Authority. For East African citizens, the price is UGX 205,000 per person per day. For resident foreigners, the fee is USD83 per person per day, and for non-resident foreigners, the rate is USD93 per person per day.
Do I need to be physically fit for the Mount Elgon hiking trip?
Yes, you should be fit as the trek can stretch to long hours covering terrains of all types. Stamina is the key to a successful hiking trip. For this, we advise our guests to practice cardio exercises like swimming, jogging, or cycling. You should also incorporate squats and lunges, and hill walking or hikes to smaller mountains near your place to practice for the big hike.

● Backpack – Firstly, ensure that you have a good-quality lightweight backpack that can hold about 30-40 liters of gear, some snacking items, water, and 1-2 sets of extra clothes.
● Boots – Since the hiking tour will take you through varied terrains, you need to invest in comfortable, well-fitted, and sturdy hiking boots. Ensure that the boots have proper ankle support and wear them a few times before starting the hike to avoid blisters.
● Trekking Poles – The other important gear is the trekking poles. Even if you are a trained trekker, it is recommended that you use the poles as they provide stability on uneven terrain.
● Clothes – You need lightweight and waterproof clothes with moisture-wicking base layers. Make sure you pack a warm fleece down jacket with a moisture-resistant outer layer. This way, you will stay protected in all kinds of weather conditions.
