Each path offers a distinct experience that depends completely on your availability and physical fitness. It’s crucial to select a trail that aligns with your overall expectations and capabilities.

Sipi Trail

Beginning at the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Center, situated 2,000 meters above sea level, this hiking trail offers a scenic start with a view of the enchanting Tutum caves, nestled in the ancient forest. Known for its gentle slopes, the Sipi Trail affords hikers the opportunity to experience all five peaks of Mount Elgon – Jackson, Wagagai, Koitabus, Mubiyi, and Sunde. The journey will conclude along the Sasa Trail, traversing zones of diverse vegetation and you will get the opportunity to cross the world’s largest mountain caldera. The vistas encountered on this path are special, offering breathtaking beauty at every turn.

Piswa Trail

Among the various trails to explore Elgon Mountain, the Piswa Trail stands out as the most extensive, offering a unique cross-border hiking experience. It spans memorable views of Kenya and Uganda. The incredible adventure starts from Kapkwata, situated within the Ndorobos community, and immerse yourself in the opportunity to encounter innumerable wildlife species and breathtaking views.

Although it is the longest trail that requires almost 6 days to complete, the journey promises unparalleled rewards. Along the way, the trail takes you to the mountain’s captivating hot springs the vast caldera, and all its prominent peaks. Please note that the hot springs’ activity may diminish during the rainy season.

Mount Elgon presents three principal trails for reaching its summit at 4,231 meters above sea level: the Bushiyi trailhead, the Sipi-Bushiyi trailhead, and the Piswa trailhead. Each trail offers unique climbing experiences, influenced by your time and your fitness level. Therefore, choosing the right trail that meets your expectations is crucial for a fulfilling adventure.

Bushiyi Trail

Bushiyi Trail is the shortest hike to the summit because it is a direct route. The Trail offers a quicker path to the peak, making it a favorite among hikers for its accessibility from Mbale. However, it is bound by challenging steep ascents and descents, weaving through local communities. The best part is that this journey allows you to immerse yourself in the local culture and even discover the renowned Arabica coffee grown in the region.

Opting for the Bushiyi trail typically involves a 3-day trek, ascending to the peak and descending back along the same path. Throughout the journey, you’ll be treated to the sights and sounds of one of the mountain’s largest bamboo forests. The route is home to various bird species. Additionally, you get to breathe the freshness and enjoy the pristine views of the Suam Gorge, Jackson Peak, and Wagagai, offering a rich tapestry of natural beauty.

The first day is a relatively easy hike, with a few short steep climbs, that lead you to Tutum Cave Camp.

Here, there is a lunch break and you continue the trail further. This is home to the famous Tutum Caves, seasonal waterfalls, and different bird species living in the cave. Day 3: Mwongogo Cave To Wagagai (4321m asl)

As the day starts, you will have breakfast at Mwongogo Can rest camp. This is the most exciting day of the hiking trail. We call it the summit day. As you continue your hike to the Wagagai peak (4321 masl),  the vegetation zones change. It becomes clearer as you move up, providing incredible views of all the peaks within the mountain.

Add to that the thrill of glimpsing the views of the Kenyan peaks (Koitobos & Sudek), the Saum Gorge, and the vast caldera, which is also the world’s largest.

Note!

You will be gaining more meters as you hike up to  the highest point with small steps. We recommend drinking more water and consuming energy bites since there is less oxygen higher up the summit. After the successful climb, you descend via Bushiyi trail to another rest camp known as Dubi River rest camp elevated at 3563m asl)for overnight camping.

To summarize:
