More About Uganda Sipi Falls
Why This Name Sipi?
The name ‘Sipi’ is derived from the local plant called “sosurowet” (a wild banana) that grows on the banks of River Sipi. It is called “Sep” in Kubsabiny, the local language. The plant is known for its medicinal properties. Local people use the parts of sosurowet plant to treat fevers and measles. During the hike to Sipi Falls from Kampala, you will encounter these wild banana trees on the way.
The Beauty of Uganda Sipi Falls Hike
Sipi Falls has become a hotspot for both foreign and local tourists in recent times. An enchanting misty fog with the rumbling sound of water welcomes you as you approach the bottom of the waterfalls. The mist is formed by water drops falling from great heights with mesmerizing strength.
The Sipi Falls hiking trails to the top of the waterfalls provide a fantastic view of the coffee plantations below and the surrounding plains of Kapchorwa and Karamoja. Not to forget the endless choices of photo-worthy spots that offer you umpteen reasons to carry your camera on this fantastic trip.
Formation of the Sipi Falls
Three waterfalls come together to form the Sipi Falls. On the foothills of Elgon Mountain, the waterfalls originate from the famous Sipi River, the source of many hot springs in the higher elevations of the mountain range. The waterfalls and the hot springs have resulted from intense geological processes across millions of years.
Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano. During active volcanic eruptions centuries ago, layers of volcanic rocks helped form the beautiful landscape of the region. When the volcano became dormant, the area got largely eroded due to the flow of water, attributed mainly to the Sipi River.
The River curves along the slopes of Elgon Mountain, creating deep valleys and gorges along the route. Over centuries, the relentless cascade of this water through defined gorges led to the creation of the Sipi Falls.
Population of Sipi Village
Sipi is a small village with scattered homes that house around 3,000 people. Their main source of livelihood and income is farming. Almost 90% of residents here are engaged in farming, though about 9% work with the local government, and about 1% are employed in the tourism industry.
