Sipi – Bushiyi Trail

climbing mount elgon

The 4-day Sipi–Bushiyi Mount Elgon trek is a spectacular journey from the lush Sebei highlands of Sipi into the cultural heart of Bugisu land, combining dramatic landscapes, rich traditions, and one of Uganda’s most rewarding summit experiences.

This route is ideal for trekkers seeking a balanced adventure — physically engaging yet enjoyable — as you hike through rolling hills, forested slopes, and open moorlands, all framed by the iconic three Sipi Waterfalls. Starting from the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre and exiting via Bushiyi, this trail delivers both natural beauty and cultural depth in equal measure.

Unlike many routes, this trek allows you to experience Sipi Falls as part of the journey, making it perfect for travellers who want more than just a summit. For those with extra time, the itinerary can also be extended to 5 days for deeper immersion into Mount Elgon’s wilderness.

Why Choose the Sipi–Bushiyi Route?

  • Start your trek in the scenic Sipi Falls region
  • Cross Mount Elgon’s vast caldera, the largest in the world
  • Summit Wagagai Peak (4,321m) — Uganda’s second-highest mountain
  • Experience two cultural regions: Sebei and Bugisu
  • Ideal for first-time high-altitude trekkers and seasoned hikers alike

Suggested 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre → Kajeri Rest Camp

Your adventure begins at the Kapkwai Forest Exploration Centre, the gateway to Mount Elgon National Park. The first day is a rewarding introduction to the mountain, covering approximately 22 kilometres over 6–7 hours.

The trail is mostly gentle, with a few short, steep sections as you pass through montane forest and bamboo zones. You’ll reach Tutum Cave, famous for its seasonal waterfalls, birdlife, and dramatic rock formations — a perfect spot for lunch and exploration.

From here, the trail continues to Kajeri Rest Camp, where you settle in for the night at an elevation of around 3,350 metres. Expect cooler temperatures, crisp mountain air, and a deep sense of accomplishment as the day ends.

Summary

  • Hiking time: 5–6 hours
  • Trail conditions: Gentle with short steep sections
  • Elevation gain: 1,900m → 3,350m
  • Breakfast: 6:30 am | Departure: 7:00 am

Day 2: Kajeri Rest Camp → Mwongogo Cave Camp (3,870m)

After an early breakfast, the landscape opens up as you begin trekking toward Mwongogo Cave, crossing sections of Mount Elgon’s vast caldera. This 11 km stretch offers sweeping views, alpine vegetation, and a strong sense of isolation in the high mountains.

Lunch is taken beside the Muyembe River, followed by a steady ascent to Mwongogo Cave, where your camp awaits. With tents set up by porters, you can relax with tea or coffee while taking in the expansive mountain views. As night falls, enjoy dinner by the campfire under a clear, star-filled sky.

  • Trail conditions: Moderate

Day 3: Mwongogo Cave → Wagagai Peak (4,321m) → Dubi River Camp

This is summit day — the highlight of your Mount Elgon trek.

After breakfast, you ascend toward Wagagai Peak, the highest point on Mount Elgon. As altitude increases, vegetation thins and panoramic views unfold across the mountain range. On clear days, you’ll see Kenyan peaks such as Koitobos and Sudek, the dramatic Suam Gorge, and the immense Elgon caldera stretching below.

The final ascent is gradual but demanding. Small, steady steps and proper hydration are essential. Standing on the summit at 4,321 metres, you’ll experience one of the most rewarding moments of the entire journey.

After celebrating your achievement, you descend via the Bushiyi trail to Dubi River Rest Camp for overnight camping at 3,563 metres.

Summary

  • Trail conditions: Gentle with steep sections
  • Breakfast: 7:00 am | Departure: 7:30 am

Day 4: Dubi River Camp → Bushiyi Exit Gate

Your final day begins with breakfast before descending through forested slopes and Bugisu communities toward the Bushiyi exit gate. This scenic hike takes around 6 hours, offering one last opportunity to absorb the beauty of Mount Elgon’s landscapes and rural life.

At the gate, you sign out of the park and say farewell to your guides, porters, and chef. You’ll then be transferred by boda-boda to River Line Resort for a hot lunch before continuing to your next destination.
