Formation of the Sipi Falls

Three waterfalls come together to form the Sipi Falls. On the foothills of Elgon Mountain, the waterfalls originate from the famous Sipi River, the source of many hot springs in the higher elevations of the mountain range. The waterfalls and the hot springs have resulted from intense geological processes across millions of years.

Mount Elgon is an extinct shield volcano. During active volcanic eruptions centuries ago, layers of volcanic rocks helped form the beautiful landscape of the region. When the volcano became dormant, the area got largely eroded due to the flow of water, attributed mainly to the Sipi River.

The River curves along the slopes of Elgon Mountain, creating deep valleys and gorges along the route. Over centuries, the relentless cascade of this water through defined gorges led to the creation of the Sipi Falls.
